Top 10 Igbo (Nigerian) Wedding Gifts.
The Igbo traditional wedding (igba nkwu) turns on a single moment: the bride carries a cup of palm wine through the crowd to find her groom. Gifting is cash, cloth and items from the bride-price list.
What not to give
Read this before the list below. These are not preferences — several are genuine offences, and they are the part most gift guides leave out.
- Refusing kola nut Kola is offered ceremonially and refusing is a real slight.
- Giving with the left hand A discourtesy.
- Treating the bride-price list as optional It is negotiated between families and taken seriously.
The ten
- 01
Money spraying
As across Nigeria — notes showered over the couple during the dancing.
- 02
Palm wine
Central to the ceremony itself. Good fresh palm wine is not a token gift.
- 03
George wrapper
The heavy embroidered cloth worn by Igbo brides. An expensive and serious gift.
- 04
Isiagu (lion-head) shirt
The traditional Igbo men’s garment for ceremonies.
- 05
Coral beads
Worn by both bride and groom. Traditional and valuable.
- 06
Kola nuts
Presented and broken ceremonially. Deeply significant.
- 07
Items from the bride-price list
A negotiated list — wrappers, drinks, tubers, livestock, cash.
- 08
Uli-inspired art or textiles
The Igbo body and wall painting tradition, now on cloth.
- 09
Home appliances or furniture
Practical family-level gifts.
- 10
Ceremonial walking stick
For the groom, from elders.
If you are giving money
Spraying during the dancing, plus envelopes. Family contributions to the bride-price items are arranged in advance and are the larger commitment.
Written as common practice. Regional and family variation is enormous — if you are close enough to the couple to ask, ask. Nobody has ever been offended by the question.
