Balinese Wedding Dates: The Pawukon and Dewasa Ayu.

Bali runs two calendars at once, and the one that governs ceremonies is unlike anything else on earth: ten weeks of different lengths running concurrently through a 210-day cycle.

The calendar

The Pawukon has no year count. Thirty wuku of seven days make a 210-day cycle, and ten separate week-systems, from a one-day week to a ten-day week, run simultaneously through it. Alongside it, the Saka lunisolar calendar governs the sasih and Nyepi.

The rules

Uncal Balung
The 42-day window around Galungan when pawiwahan is not held.
Ingkel Wong
Weeks in which ceremonies concerning human beings, weddings among them, are avoided. It falls on the wuku Sinta, Wariga, Langkir, Tambir and Bala.
Sasih
Katiga, Kapat, Kalima, Kapitu and Kadasa are considered good for marriage. Jyestha and Sadha are sasih sebel, and Kasa, Karo and Kaenem are widely avoided.
Penanggal over pangelong
The waxing half of the lunar month is preferred. Pangelong means "decreasing", and the reasoning is that happiness would shrink with the moon.
Forbidden combinations
Rangda Tiga, Carik Walangati and Tanpa Guru are named categories of dates said to bring widowhood, discord or disobedient children.

What can be worked out, and what cannot

A calendar can determine

  • All ten wewaran cycles, and the wuku, for any date
  • Uncal Balung and Ingkel Wong windows
  • Sasih and the waxing or waning half
  • Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi and the Tumpek days

Only a pemangku or sulinggih can decide

The dewasa themselves. There are 191 named dewasa, and the defining combinations for most of them are not public — the most complete open-source Balinese calendar library lists them all and marks them unsupported, deferring to a printed manual. The rules also vary by village, clan and lontar lineage, which is why one Balinese calendar app makes its criteria user-configurable. There is no single correct answer to encode.

A common claim, corrected

A Balinese calendar app can pick your wedding date.

Balinese sources are consistent that apps are accurate for the basic cycles but cannot replace a sulinggih's specific interpretation. The expected workflow is to use a calendar to shortlist candidate dates and then take that shortlist to a priest, who will weigh it against the couple's own otonan. Treat any tool, including ours, as a way to narrow the field, not to settle it.

Nyepi is worth planning around regardless of tradition: for twenty-four hours the whole island stops, and the airport closes.
