Top 10 Mexican Wedding Gifts.
Mexican weddings have a distinctive institution — the padrinos and madrinas, sponsors who each take responsibility for a specific element of the wedding. Being asked is an honour, and it is a form of gift in itself.
What not to give
Read this before the list below. These are not preferences — several are genuine offences, and they are the part most gift guides leave out.
- Yellow marigolds (cempasúchil) Strongly associated with Día de Muertos and the dead.
- Knives As in most cultures, read as cutting the bond.
- Assuming you are a padrino Sponsorship is invited, not volunteered. Ask before arranging anything.
- Purple and black together Read as mourning colours in a religious context.

If you are giving money
Cash is welcome and increasingly common, often collected during the money dance (el baile del dólar) where guests pin notes to the couple. Sponsoring something as a padrino is the higher-status alternative and is arranged well in advance.
Written as common practice. Regional and family variation is enormous — if you are close enough to the couple to ask, ask. Nobody has ever been offended by the question.
